Twitter Canada gives us a glimpse into the first week of #Rio2016

The first week of the Rio 2016 Olympic games have been exciting to say the least.

The Olympic games never cease to dominate social media and Rio 2016 is no exception. Twitter Canada provided a brief overview of which elements of the games its users are talking about most.

First and foremost, the teenage Olympian Penny Oleksiak was number one on the list of Canada’s most tweeted-about athletes after capturing five medals; gold in Women’s 100 metre freestyle, silver in Women’s 100 metre butterfly, and two bronze in both the 4×100 metre relay and the 4×200 metre relay. You can find her on Twitter at @OleksiakPenny.

Other athletes who made the top ten include tennis player Genie Bouchard (@geniebouchard), rugby player Jen Kish (@jen_kish), swimmer Kyle Masse (@Kjmasse), diver Roseline Filion (@Roselinefilion), diver Meghan Benefeito (@MegBenfeito), rugby player Ghislaine Landry (@ghis_landry), swimmer Sandy Mainville (@sandy_mainville), swimmer Ryan Cochrane (@cochraneryan), and basketball player Kia Nurse (@KayNurse11).

After Oleksiak’s performance captured the country, it isn’t surprising to discover that Swimming topped the list of 10 most talked about sports on Twitter Canada. Other sports that made the list include gymnastics, soccer, tennis, judo, basketball, volleyball, fencing, diving, cycling.
