Google’s Android Daydream VR platform could launch in a matter of ‘weeks’

It looks like Google is preparing to launch Daydream at some point in the next few weeks.

A report stemming from Bloomberg indicates the company is recruiting YouTube stars to create a catalog of exclusive 360-degree virtual reality videos design to run on Daydream compatible smartphones. Specifically, Google is funding 360-degree video from YouTube celebrity Justin Ezarik, known as iJustine on the platform. According to Bloomberg, Google is spending “hundreds of thousands of dollars” on VR content for the upcoming platform.

At I/O 2016, shortly following the unveiling of the upcoming virtual reality, Google showed off IMAX, NBA and a Hulu apps all running on Daydream-certified Android devices. The tech giant plans to expand this offering by paying in the “high six figures” range for video games, with smaller amounts of cash being spent on films designed to utilize Google’s Jump 360-degree video platform.

Daydream is Google’s attempt at bringing virtual reality to the masses by creating a universal platform that runs on hardware-certified VR devices, giving developers a viable VR platform to release apps, games and other software on. Few phones have been Daydream certified, with ZTE’s Axon 7 being the only device so far to receive approval.
