It looks like Google isn’t the only company preparing to compete with Amazon on the voice-activated assistant front. Product images and FCC documentation obtained by Ausdroid suggest the world’s largest smartphone maker could be preparing to release its own Echo competitor called Scoop.
Besides what can be gleaned from photos of the device, there’s not much information on Scoop, nor Samsung’s plans relating to it. The device’s most notable feature is the leather strap attached to its bottom. At the very least, it seems Samsung intends to position Scoop as a mobile Bluetooth speaker which users can carry around their home and to other locations with ease and style. According to Ausdroid, the Scoop is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.5mm audio input jack, Micro USB charging port and a microphone for hands-free calling.
As VentureBeat notes, it’s interesting to see Samsung take a stab at what could be a voice-activated personal assistant. Voice recognition software isn’t exactly one of the company’s strengths. This device becomes a lot more interesting and significant if it ships with software from Google.
Samsung is scheduled to hold a keynote event at IFA Berlin next week. The company has already said it will announce the Gear S3 then, and perhaps we’ll see the Scoop at the event, as well.
