Apple to remove abandoned and outdated apps from the App Store

Here’s something that will help with discoverability on the iTunes App Store. According to an email sent to developers, Apple will soon start to remove outdated and abandoned apps from the App Store.

“We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps, removing apps that no longer function as intended, don’t follow current review guidelines, or are outdated,” says Apple in the email.

Apple also plans to impose more stringent naming guidelines. Going forward, developers will have to limit the title of their app to 50 characters. The plan here is to rein in apps that skew search results.

Apple will begin cleaning up the App Store on September 7th, the same day it’s set to announce the new iPhone.
