Samsung officially recalls Galaxy Note 7 devices

Samsung Canada today announced it is officially recalling the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone it sold from August 19th to September 1st of this year.

“The Samsung Note7 smartphone battery has the potential to overheat and burn, posing a potential fire hazard,” says the Health Canada posting, “Health Canada and Samsung Canada have received one report of a phone battery overheating.  No injuries have been reported. Samsung has received over 70 reported cases in the United States.”

The posting also adds that 21,953 of the recalled handsets were sold in Canada, and shows the model codes, SKUs and UPCs customers can use to identify the faulty devices.

“Samsung continues to ensure that consumer safety remains our top priority. We are working with Health Canada and our carrier and retail partners to alert Note7 users of the issue” said Paul Brannen, COO and executive vice-president of mobile and enterprise solutions at Samsung Canada in the company’s release.

“We are asking users to power down their Galaxy Note7s and exchange their devices through the Canadian product exchange.”

Samsung began its Canadian product exchange on September 7th, and first announced an acknowledgement of the issue in Canada on September 2nd.
