Huawei and Leica to establish camera R&D centre in Wetzlar, Germany

While the Honor 8 never made its way to Canada, smartphone consumers in this country can expect Leica’s handiwork to make its way into more of Huawei’s smartphones thanks to a new partnership between the two companies.

Late last week, Huawei and Leica announced plans to establish a new research centre at the latter’s Wetzlar, Germany head office.

Dubbed the Max Berek Innovation Lab (Professor Berek developed many of Leica’s early lenses in the mid-1920s), the research centre will “drive further development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve imaging quality in a wide range of photographic and mobile device applications,” according to Huawei.

Huawei is no stranger strategic partnership, particularly here in Canada. In April, the company made a $3-million investment into the University of Toronto. Huawei is also working with the Government of Ontario to build out 5G infrastructure throughout the province.
