Apple launches enhanced Game of Thrones iBook with exclusive Winds of Winter excerpt

Game of Thrones — known to fans of the book series as A Song of Ice and Fire — has arrived at its 20th anniversary. To celebrate, Apple and Random House have launched an exclusive “Enhanced Edition” iBook of A Game of Thrones, with books two through five to follow in the coming months.

The interactive version of A Game of Thrones aims to make the complex story easier to follow with links to handy reference content such as annotations, family trees and sigils and a glossary of important terms.

Additionally, the iBook will feature an excerpt of author George R.R. Martin’s long-awaited sixth book, The Winds of Winter, which briefly went up on Martin’s website, but now officially exists only in the iBook (or, unofficially, on Reddit).

“We’re now entering a new period in the history of publishing,” said Martin in an accompanying statement.

“The digital book gives readers the ability to experience all this rich secondary material that had not been possible before. These enhanced editions available only on iBooks include sigils and family trees and glossaries. Anything that confuses you, anything you want to know more about, it’s right there at your fingertips. It’s an amazing next step in the world of books.”

Previously, Apple released enhanced editions of J.K. Rowling’s massively popular Harry Potter series with animations and annotations from the author.

Fans of the series can purchase A Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition for $9.99 CAD at apple.co/gameofthrones. Enhanced Editions of books two through five are also available for pre-order.
