Shopify launches experiential learning program in partnership with Carleton University

Traditional teaching methods have been picked apart and analyzed over and over again. How can teachers get the students to hear more, absorb more, and care a lot more?

Shopify wants to take a swing at solving this problem with the launch of an experimental learning program in partnership with Carleton University. Eleven Carleton students are kicking off this program this fall by splitting their time between Carleton’s campus and Shopify’s headquarters.

“This is the best of both worlds. It’s the same strong Carleton curriculum combined with real Shopify software projects for real clients. It’s a combination that will reinforce what the students learn and very likely improve their career experiences down the road,’’  Douglas Howe, chair of the department of computer science at Carleton, said in a statement.

Students will have the freedom to take as much time as they choose to understand the concepts taught during their time at Shopify. Students will obtain a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS), will receive a salary and have tuition paid by Shopify.

We designed this program with Carleton to give students the perfect mix of hands-on experience, self-paced learning and theoretical foundations,” said Jean-Michel Lemieux, senior vice president of engineering at Shopify

He added that, “they will have the opportunity over the next couple of years to learn and make changes to Shopify that will affect millions of people.’’

This is the first BCS program of its kind in Canada. Registration for entry in September 2017 will be open to students this coming October.
