USB Implementers Forum creates standard for removing 3.5mm headphone jack

The USB Implementers Forum published USB Audio Device Class 3.0 recently, which standardizes audio over a USB-C Interface.

This gives audio-makers the standard they need to follow in Apple’s footsteps by removing the 3.5mm headphone jack in their devices and enabling audio through the USB-C port.

Documents from the agreement state that battery life could potentially be improved by removing the 3.5mm headphone jack. Furthermore, Engadget reports that the change could mean better digital audio support and a more straightforward way to implement voice recognition.

Removing the 3.5mm headphone jack could also mean slimmer and more water resistant devices in the future. Keep in mind that a USB-C port specification could be particularly useful for non-mobile devices where port space is highly in demand.

This doesn’t mean, however, that every OEM will embrace USB-C audio software like trailblazers Apple and Motorola.

Companies such as Samsung have expressed their commitment to the 3.5mm jack and will likely be hard pressed to remove it. For those who were on the fence, however, this may be the confirmation they need.
