Samsung starts production on 10nm FinFET mobile processors

Samsung today announced it has started mass production on mobile processors that features its new 10-nanometer FinFET technology, a feat it says is an industry first.

“The industry’s first mass production of 10nm FinFET technology demonstrates our leadership in advanced process technology,” said Jong Shik Yoon, executive vice president and head of foundry business at Samsung Electronics.

According to Samsung, system-on-a-chips (SoCs) made with the company’s new 10nm tech manufacturing process use 40 percent less power and feature 27 percent better performance than their 14nm counterparts. Samsung used innovative techniques such as triple-patterning to overcome scaling limitations.

Presumably, one of the first smartphones to include a 10nm chip will be the company’s upcoming Galaxy S refresh.
