Samsung acquires Halifax-based Rich Communications Services

On the heels of its acquisition of Harman International, Samsung has announced the purchase of NewNet Canada from Skyview Capital’s NewNet Communication Technologies.

NewNet Canada was known as NewPace prior to its acquisition, and is a leading provider of RCS infrastructure and services. The acquisition represents the mobile network’s steps towards providing IP-based networks and services.

Samsung will accelerate the deployment of RCS-enabled networks, providing consumers with standards-based messaging and communications services. Furthermore, the purchase will enable Samsung to offer the service to mobile operators who don’t already have their own RCS infrastructure.

The purchase was made for an undisclosed sum in the same week as Samsung’s $8 billion USD acquisition of the connected devices company Harman International Industries. The purchase of Harman is supposedly intended to enhance Samsung’s presence in the automotive technology space.

Samsung claims that customers will experience enhanced calling, group chat and large file transfer as well as other features. NewNet Canada is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will continue to operate independently as a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics.
