Limited number of Nintendo Switch pre-orders set to go live on January 13th [Update: price $399 in Canada]

A small amount of Switch pre-orders will go live on January 13th at one of the company’s flagship stores in New York City, according to Nintendo. It’s unclear when pre-orders will for the Nintendo Switch will go live in Canada.

The Japanese gaming giant shared the news earlier today via its official Twitter account. Specifically Nintendo states that, “a limited quantity of pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch will begin on 1/13.” While we can’t confirm anything yet, the latter statement likely indicates that the company will artificially limit supply of the console, at least at launch. Nintendo has a history of adopting this strategy with their game systems, dating all the way back to the launch of the original NES in 1985.

Furthermore, the company’s most recent console, the NES Mini, an updated version of the original NES, remains nearly impossible to find, despite hitting store shelves more than two months ago.

At 11pm tonight, Nintendo will reveal the Switch’s final release date and official price, as well as the system’s launch lineup, during a live stream broadcast from Tokyo.

Canadian consumers will be able to pre-order the Switch from Best Buy, EBGames, Walmart and Toys “R” Us. It’s unclear when pre-orders will go live in Canada, but in the U.S. it’s believed that they’ll open at 9am at Nintendo’s flagship store in New York City. We’ve reached out to Nintendo for clarification regarding a specific Canadian pre-order date and will update this story when we hear back.

Update 12/01/17 10:05pm: Nintendo has officially revealed a variety of new information about the Switch and confirmed its $399 Canadian price tag.

Update 12/01/17 9:44pm: Walmart Canada has listed the Nintendo Switch as “coming soon” and has potentially given the console’s price point away.

While the official unveiling will be at 11:00pm EST, Walmart is stating the Switch is set to retail for $399 in Canada, which is slightly higher than the $330 price tag Toys “R” Us leaked back in November. However, this price could also just be a placeholder.

Update 12/01/17: An earlier version of this story stated that a tweet stemming from the official Nintendo Canada Twitter account confirmed the Switch’s pre-order date. The tweet, which was posted by a Switch fan blog, was actually retweeted by the official Nintendo Canada account.
