Huawei preparing to join the AI race with its own voice assistant

Huawei Nova Plus

Reports indicate that Huawei, which is also the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, is developing its own personal voice assistant to join the likes of Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.

Bloomberg reports that Huawei’s assistant will attempt to compete primarily with existing products from Apple, Amazon and Google. The assistant would likely communicate in Chinese languages and will target domestic users.

However, Huawei has reportedly said that it will continue to work with Google and Amazon’s services outside of China. For example, the manufacturer announced last month that it would use Alexa on its Mate 9 smartphones in the United States.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer operates in a crowded national market where many of the features offered through Android phones are inaccessible by the population.

Furthermore however, Huawei currently trails only Apple and Samsung Electronics in global smartphone shipments, with over $33 million in sales from its consumer business this past year.

Very few of Huawei’s devices are available in Canada apart from the Nova Plus, though this could change following this year’s Mobile World Congress.
