Motorola unveils the all-metal Moto G5 and G5 Plus

Lenovo has debuted its two most recent Motorola handsets at Mobile World Congress, the mid-range Moto G5 and G5 Plus, revealing a new aluminum-backed design.

The Moto G5 has a Snapdragon 430 processor, 5-inch FHD 1920 x 1080 pixel LCD display and a 13-megapixel f/2.0 rear shooter with phase detect autofocus.

Its higher-end sibling, the Moto G5 Plus has a Snapdragon 625 processor (the same featured in the well-reviewed Moto Z Play), 5.2-inch FHD 1080p LCD display and a 12-megapixel f/1.7 rear shooter with dual-focus pixels. As for video, the G5 Plus is capable of shooting 4K video, while the G5 records Full HD. Both phones have a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with a f/2.2 aperture.

The Moto G5 Plus stocks a 3,000mAh battery, while the Moto G5 has a 2,800mAh removable battery. In storage, the G5 has either 16GB or 32GB of storage depending on the region, expandable by MicroSD up to 128GB. The G5 Plus features 32GB or 64GB variants and also supports expandable storage. Both devices stock RAM beginning at 2GB, with Moto’s Canadian website only showing the 2GBRAM/16GB ROM G5. Both devices also feature front-facing fingerprint sensors.

Software-wise, the G5 and G5 Plus run Android Nougat 7.0 and include the Google Assistant, the popular AI featured in Google’s Pixel devices.

The Moto G5 coming to Canada will not have NFC, like the U.S. version, negating the opportunity for contactless mobile payments.

The Moto G5 is arriving in Canada in late spring 2017. So far, Moto has only announced European pricing at 199 Euros or around $275 CAD. It’s unlikely Canadians will see a direct conversion, but the price point is promising.

As for the G5 Plus, a Motorola press representative tells MobileSyrup that there is “no confirmation on whether the Moto G5 Plus will be coming to Canada.”

In the U.S., its price starts at $229 USD for 2GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM, translating to about $300 CAD — less than what was charged for last year’s model, which did make its way to Canada.

Update 02/24/17: Updated with comment from Motorola press representative.

Update 03/01/17: Motorola has confirmed to MobileSyrup that the Moto G5 coming to Canada does not have NFC. The post has been updated to reflect this fact.
