Samsung’s foldable smartphone could finally be unveiled this year

Samsung has reportedly been working on a smartphone that features a foldable display for a number of years.

Early roadmaps revealed the company would break the “technology barrier” necessary to start producing a foldable smartphone at scale at some point in early 2017.

A new report from the Korea-based ETNews indicates Samsung will, in fact, first give its foldable smartphone to partners to see if there is customer demand — apparently, there will only be “thousands” available. If there is wider interest, Samsung will produce a limited run of the device in Q3 2018, with early rumours pointing to 100,000 units worldwide.

Internally known as “Project Valley” and “Galaxy X,” a patent application by Samsung in November showed off a foldable device with a hinge in the middle that resembles how Microsoft’s Surface Book is built. The device is expected to feature a 5-inch curved OLED display that could also possibly transform into a 7-inch tablet.
