As little as two months ago, it seemed like foldable mobile devices were “right around the corner,” with Samsung reportedly showing off its latest foldable smartphone prototype at Mobile World Congress.
Now the company itself is saying it’s more likely consumers will see a foldable display smartphone arrive in stores sometime before the end of the decade. Interestingly, the Galaxy S8 and its ‘Infinity Display’ is partially to blame for the delay.
During this week’s Display TechSalon in Seoul, South Korea, Kim Tae-woong, principal engineer at Samsung Display said, “Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop foldable display. The technology is expected to be mature around 2019.”
Chung Won-seok, an analyst with HI Investment and Securities, echoed Kim’s comments, saying Samsung will likely release its first foldable smartphone in 2019 because of strong early sales of the Galaxy S8.
Of course, Samsung is not the only company working on foldable display technology. According to different prototypes and patent filings, other tech companies like LG and Microsoft are developing their own take on the technology, so we could still see foldable smartphones before 2019.
