Microsoft reveals Project Scorpio’s final technical specs

Project Scorpio specs cpu

Microsoft claims that its upcoming mid-generation update to the Xbox One will be “the most powerful console ever.

Now that the tech giant has finally revealed the console’s final specs, that certainly seems to be the case, though it’s clear that as expected, high-end gaming PCs are still capable of out-specing Microsoft’s latest system.

Via Eurogamer’s Digital FoundryMicrosoft has revealed that Scorpio will feature most notably, feature a custom CPU and 12GB of GDDR5 RAM.

While Digital Foundry’s report on Scorpio is full of marketing language and hype, the console does seem to be the most powerful home video game system ever released. Microsoft also showed the publication a demo of Forza running at 60 fps in 4K, though it’s still unclear if the system will truly be able to output visuals with 4K fidelity.

While Microsoft is positioning Scorpio is a mid-generation update, its specs indicate the console could feel more like a full generational leap. Microsoft, however, has a steep hill to climb in the sales department, with the PlayStation 4 currently continuing to outsell the Xbox One by a significant margin.

It is worth noting, however, that Scorpio seems set to be significantly more powerful than Sony’s mid-generation PlayStation 4 Pro. The company also recently cancelled marquee first-party titles like Scalebound and Fable Legends, two titles that are widely believed to be almost finished.

For Project Scorpio to truly succeed it needs to have a library of solid titles good enough to convince players to upgrade to Microsoft’s more powerful console. It is quite possible, however, that Microsoft could hit this mark with E3 looming close on the horizon.

We’ll have more on Project Scorpio leading up to the console’s E3 reveal.
