Toronto District School Board blocks Wi-Fi access to Netflix, Instagram and Snapchat in schools

Netflix app on iPhone 7

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has shut down Wi-Fi access to Netflix, Instagram and Snapchat until the end of the school year.

In a statement on the TDSB website, the board says it made the move because the three apps collectively takeĀ up more than 20 percent of overall wireless network usage.

DueĀ the network beingĀ “older” and “slower,” the board says that the added strain from these apps makes “many necessary operational tasks, such as attendance, registration and report cards, nearly impossible to complete.”

“This interim measure will help alleviate congestion and boost network capacity while minimizing the impact on teaching and learning,” TDSB wrote on the site.

The board says that it will start working on implementing a newer, faster system into its schools over the summer. An improvement is planned in time for the start of the new year in September, when regular Wi-Fi access is expected to be restored.
