NextVR offers NBA Finals highlights on Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream

Samsung Gear VR in hand

Basketball fans get a courtside experience of the 2017 NBA Finals through virtual reality. Running from June 1st – June 18th, highlights from the games will be available on the NBA Finals Channel through broadcasting and media production company NextVR.

The VR highlight packages will include play-by-play calls of one-on-one drives, notable three point shots and the biggest dunks. To achieve this, 6K RED 3D camera rigs have been positioned behind the basket, at the scorer’s tables and above mid-court. Commentators will describe the action and directors will determine which displayed graphics and shots are shown, keeping possible headset-wearing user sickness in mind.

To view all of this content, you’ll need a Samsung Gear VR or Google Daydream, as well as the NextVR app on either the Oculus Store or Google Play Store, respectively.

NextVR and the NBA previously offered weekly livestreams of regular season games through these headsets. These could only be viewed either at $7.99 per game or with an $89.99-per-season League Pass premium membership. It’s important to note that while Canadians can watch this content, it only features American teams. Therefore, you won’t get to see any coverage of the Toronto Raptors games.

This partnership with NextVR is one of several NBA technology-related initiatives that the NBA has gotten into as of late. Back in February, the organization also teamed with Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of its NBA 2K basketball video game series, to form an eSports league for professional competitive tournaments.
