There’s more to making a great movie than having the most expensive equipment. At least, that’s what the filmmakers at the 6th annual Toronto Smartphone Film Festival (TSFF) hope to prove.

The TSFF is set to take place from June 15 to June 17, at the Eaton Lecture Theatre in the Rogers Communications Centre.

For three straight days, lovers of film will be able to catch movies filmed exclusively on smartphone devices.

“What you are about to see during the festival is just mind-blowing,” said Mingu Kim, the TSFF’s executive director, in a media release. “You will be amazed to see what these filmmakers captured on their smartphones to turn them into films.”

The TFSS is open to filmmakers around the world. This year, 600 films from at least 50 countries are competing for the two $1,000 CAD grand prizes.

The festival is meant to be a celebration of the kind of art that can be created using smartphones and personal electronic devices, instead of expensive studio-quality equipment.

The TFSS is also a showcase of the work that’s produced at the intersection of art and technology.

“With the smartphone technology on the rise, our festival is an inevitable piece of the artistic landscape of Toronto,” concluded Kim.
