Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch to launch on October 27

During Nintendo’s E3 keynote presentation today, the company revealed that the first major Mario title to hit the new console, Super Mario Odyssey, is set for an October 27th, 2017 release date.

The new 3D Mario game seems to have more in common with titles like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, rather than more recent 2D entries in the iconic series. The game also puts Mario in control of a top hat-shaped airship that allows players to move between worlds. There are, however, sections of the game that are two dimensional and have more in common with retro Mario titles.

One particular world is named “New Donk City” — a reference to the Donkey Kong theme running through the floating island that seems to be inspired by 1930s New York City. The trailer shown off during Nintendo’s E3 keynote also started with Mario fighting a realistically rendered dinosaur, a bizarre situation for anyone familiar with the Mario series.

The contrast between the game’s realistic environments and the cartoony visuals Nintendo is known for is stark and somewhat off-putting. This is, however, Nintendo trying something different, something fans of the Japanese gaming giant have been asking the company to do for a number of years now.

Other major announcements include the fact that a core Pokémon game is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch
