Google will update Pixel smartphones to Android 8.1 in the ‘coming weeks’

Google Pixel rear in hand

Earlier today, Google revealed that its latest pair of smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, feature a custom chipset designed by the company itself. Dubbed the Pixel Visual Core, the chipset is built to provide support for features like the company’s HDR+ pipeline.

Nestled in the company’s blog post about the Pixel Visual Core is a mention of Android 8.1, the first Android Oreo maintenance update. In short, the update is coming soon, according to Google.

“In the coming weeks, we will enable Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in the developer preview of Android Oreo 8.1 (MR1),” say the company’s Ofer Shacham and Masumi Reynders.

There’s no word yet on what the update will do other than enable the Pixel Visual Core. If Oreo’s first maintenance release is anything like the first Nougat maintenance release, Google will add several small features to the operating system. For context, 7.1 added app shortcuts and support for circular icons, among other minor changes.
