Canada’s Magna joins BMW-Intel alliance to manufacture self-driving vehicles

Canadian auto parts producer Magna International has joined a consortium with BMW and Intel for the purpose of developing a self-driving vehicle platform for auto makers by 2020.

The alliance is due to the high cost of manufacturing self-driving vehicle technology. Developing this technology requires extensive research and development as well as software expertise, which isn’t within the scope of expertise that traditional car-makers require.

The BMW-Intel alliance –which now includes Magna– wants to develop new technology in order to have self-driving cars on the road by 2021.

The consortium includes the three previously mentioned manufacturers, as well as Mobileye, the world’s largest supplier of automotive collision detection systems, Fiat Chrysler, and suppliers Delphi Automotive and Continental AG, a German manufacturer company.

Additionally, Magna will help automakers equip the platform designed by the consortium.
