More and more often, smartphone manufacturers have been incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the devices they’re releasing in the market. In particular, Apple views its upcoming iPhone X phone as a key player in shaping the future of AI.

Speaking at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s 30th anniversary celebration in Taipei, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams said that the “frameworks” and “neural engines” put in the iPhone X will significantly contribute to the future of AI technology.

“We do view that as a huge piece of the future, we believe these frameworks will allow developers to create apps that will do more and more in this space, so we think the phone is a major platform,” Williams said at the Taipei event.

One of the iPhone X’s marquee features is Face ID, which uses facial recognition software to let users unlock their phones.

“I think we’re at an inflection point, with on-device computing, coupled with the potential of AI, to really change the world,” Williams said. “Some pieces will be done in data centres, some will be on the device, but we are already doing AI in the broader sense of the word, not the ‘machines thinking for themselves’ version of AI,” he said, referring to Nvidia, an industry leader in AI.

Pre-orders for the iPhone X will begin on Friday, October 27th, with prices beginning at $1,319 CAD. The iPhone X will launch on November 3rd.
