The fad is over: Snapchat has ‘hundreds of thousands’ of unsold Spectacles

Spectacles

While Spectacles were once a hot commodity, new reports have emerged indicating the social media giant Snap has “hundreds of thousands” of Spectacles sitting and collecting dust in Chinese warehouses.

The report, which originally stemmed from the often-reliable The Information, comes following Snap CEO Evan Spiegel boasting about Spectacles sales topping 150,000 just a few weeks ago. Originally, Spectacles were initially set to be a limited-time item, with the smart glasses only being available at guerrilla marketing style pop-up shops in the United States.

Spectacles recently made their way to Canada through Snap’s online store, though the demand for the glasses has certainly curbed significantly in the last few months.

For example, I have a pair of Spectacles sitting in my closet that I haven’t touched in months. While they worked well the few times I tried them, I’m just not very active on Snapchat. Perhaps if Spectacles’ 360-videos were also compatible with Instagram — I know they sort of are — I would be more included to take them out occasionally.
