Facebook introduces News Feed guidelines for publishers

Back in January, Facebook launched the ‘Facebook Journalism Project’ — an initiative encouraging collaboration between the social media giant and news agencies to better inform users.

Since then, however, Facebook says it has had many publishers reaching out for more insight into understanding how News Feed works and to be informed of some best practices on the platform.

In response, Facebook has now released the ‘News Feed Publisher Guidelines’ to provide “do’s and don’ts” for publishers using the platform.

Some of the guidelines include options on how to optimize the mobile web experience and ways to avoid what may be considered ‘clickbait’ content.

The full list of News Feed Publisher Guidelines can be found here.

The new guidelines are an extension of the ‘Publishing Principles’ Facebook released in May.

Facebook has been trying to keep its site full of clean and quality content for some time now. The company faced criticism over how an operation likely based out of Russia used the platform to share thousands of stories on divisive subjects like race, immigration and LGBT rights.

To ensure the same sort of issues don’t happen again, Facebook has launched a Canadian election integrity initiative to help protect the country from similar outside involvement leading to the 2019 election. A June report from Canada’s electronic spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), warned that it’s “very likely” that Canada’s upcoming election will be targeted by hackers.
