OnePlus starts rolling out OxygenOS update, includes fix for Freedom Mobile LTE

Some good news for Freedom Mobile subscribers looking to purchase the OnePlus 5

Chinese device manufacturer OnePlus is pushing an update that will surely make some Freedom Mobile customers happy.

According to a November 2nd forum post, OnePlus is slowly rolling out an update to OxygenOS that will improve the phone’s Band 66 LTE connectivity on Freedom’s network.

Other updates include improving VoLTE support for Airtel subscribers in India, a fix for a WPA2 Wi-Fi security issue, improved battery and GPS services, as well as general bug fixes.

“As always, this OTA will be incremental,” said Jimmy Z, a OnePlus staff member in the November 2nd forum post. “The OTA will reach a small percentage of users today, and we’re begin a broader rollout in a few days.”

The OnePlus 5 might be one of the best — and most affordable — Android flagships on the market, but Freedom Mobile customers quickly reported that the device had trouble staying connected to the carrier’s LTE network.

OnePlus initially suggested that the issue was on Freedom’s end.

Crystal Z, a OnePlus forum moderators said that company’s logs indicated that “the [Freedom] network refused LTE from our device.”

Freedom then confirmed to MobileSyrup, that “only LTE-Ready devices sold by Freedom Mobile are guaranteed to have these necessary software features.”

With this update, it seems that OnePlus has managed to find a solution to what may be a carrier-side issue.

It’s also important to mention that this update might still not fully resolve any Freedom LTE connection issues. Still, if it sticks, that’ll be good news for Freedom customers who purchased a OnePlus 5 — as well as any customers holding out for the now-confirmed OnePlus 5T.
