Google’s new, seemingly experimental ‘Files Go’ app, recently made an appearance on the Google Play Store, but was quickly pulled just a few hours later.
The app, which is being marketed by Google as a “smart storage manager,” allows Android users to easily view what files/apps are installed on their device. While third-party Android apps have served this purpose for years, Files Go’s layout is simple and straightforward. The app also makes it possible to view what apps or files you no longer need, freeing up precious storage space on your device.
The main screen of the app features two distinct parts: Storage and Files. Storage indicates how much is being stored on the device and what available space you have left. Files Go also suggests what apps might make the most sense to delete and offers quick links for deleting photos, videos and applications you no longer use.
The Files section of the app allows you to browse your phone’s content based on downloads, received files, videos, images, audio and documents. It’s also possible to send these files to other users via Bluetooth without the need for an internet connection.
While Google’s new Files Go app has been pulled from the Play Store — likely because it was released too early — it’s still possible to download the APK from reliable sources like APK Mirror.
It’s unclear if Google plans to publicly release Files Go at some point in the near future, though it’s very likely it will.
Files Go is only compatible Android 5.0 Lollipop and above.
