Vidéotron announces it now has one million mobile customers

Vidéotron has announced it has now reached one million residential and business mobile subscribers.

The Quebec-based telecom provider originally launched its own mobile network in September 2010.

Going forward, Vidéotron says it plans to “continue pushing the mobile tech envelope by densifying network coverage, increasing download speeds and reducing latency.” The carrier cited its recent introduction of voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) feature, which provides eligible users with improved indoor coverage and faster call routing by switching calls to take place over the carrier’s LTE network, rather than HSPA.

Vidéotron also notes it is girding for the technological revolution that is coming with the advent of 5G and the Internet of Things. The company is currently making major investments in its infrastructure to support future demand and is actively involved in R&D, such as the Open-Air Laboratory for Smart Living, where the carrier is working with other parters to help grow Quebec’s tech industry.

“As we look back over the road we have travelled since our launch in 2010, we are filled with pride,” said president and CEO Manon Brouillette in a press statement.

“A million thanks to our clients. They are the ones who push us to do better every day. This is an important milestone for Videotron and for each of its 6,500 employees, without whom this ambitious project would not have been possible.”

The Quebec regional carrier is a major fourth player in the province, often spurring promotional pricing battles from the Big Three Canadian carriers — Rogers, Bell and Telus.

In August, the carrier’s parent company, Quebec-based media conglomerate Quebecor, released their second quarter earnings results, reporting an estimated $1.03 billion CAD in revenue — a four percent increase over the previous year. It was expected the increase in revenue was largely due to Vidéotron’s sale of its AWS-1 spectrum to Rogers and Shaw.
