Apple adds Selfie Scenes and 360-degree selfies in Clips 2.0 iPhone X update

Clips 2.0

Apple has announced a significant update to Clips, the company’s free video editing app for iPhone and iPad.

The update adds new Selfie Scenes, artistic transfer effects and a redesigned interface to the relatively easy-to-use video editing platform.

“Clips users love how quick and easy it is to create amazing videos on iPhone or iPad,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Apps Product Marketing, in a statement issued to MobileSyrup. “And we’re making it even more fun with Selfie Scenes. By harnessing the incredible new TrueDepth camera system on iPhone X, users can now record selfies against a variety of fun and whimsical backdrops with just a tap.”

Clips 2.0 update

Below is a quick list of Clips 2.0’s new features (many of them are iPhone X specific):

Selfie Scenes

Selfie scenes allow users to select from a variety of pre-created scenes, including two specific scenes pulled from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Each seen can be navigated in 360-degrees, surrounding all sides of the iPhone X’s display. The feature also includes sound effects.

New Effects and Stickers

Any photo or video can be turned into what Apple is calling a “moody oil painting,” “watercolour” or “elegant pencil sketch,” all in real-time while recording a video.

The app also features additional content from Disney, including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, as well as Star Wars stickers, which include animated versions of Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Chewbacca and more.

iCloud Support

Finally, users can now upload their clips directly to iCloud from the iPad or iPhone, making editing on multiple devices and sharing across social media platforms, a much simpler process.

Clips 2.0 is available now as a free update to the App Store and is compatible with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 and any iPhone running iOS 11.1. Selfie Scenes, however, are only available on the iPhone X. Finally, the new style Transfer Effects are only available on the iPhone 7 and later models of the smartphone, as well as the 2017 iPad Pro.

What’s going to be more interesting moving forward, is how much access Apple intends to give third-party developers to the iPhone X’s front-facing Kinect-like camera module. If Apple is able to do fascinating things with the tech, it will be interesting to see what third-party developers are capable of creating as well.

Clips and the app’s latest update are available for free on iOS for the iPhone and the iPad.
