Police say Texas man used messaging app to target 12-year-old Ontario girl

A 25-year-old Texas man has been arrested after allegedly encouraging a 12-year-old girl in Ontario to send him explicit photos of herself.

According to Windsor police, the man was communicating with the girl since September 2016 using an instant messaging app and pretending be another young girl.

Police say the man convinced the girl to send photos of herself “in various states of undress,” and later threatened to publish the images unless she continued to send more to him.

Windsor police say they began an investigation once the girl and her mother reported the incident in October 2016.

Investigators say they were able to track the man to Dallas, Texas using data taken from the messenger app. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security worked with Windsor police to identify the suspect.

The police report does not specify which instant messaging app the Texas man used.

“This case also serves as a great reminder to any and all offenders,” said Sgt. Steve Betteridge of the Windsor Police Service in a media release. “The digital world leaves behind a digital fingerprint and no matter where you are in the world, law enforcement partners will work with one another to keep our communities safe.”

However, police say the investigation is ongoing because they can’t rule out if the man interacted with any other children.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Windsor Police Service at 519-255-6700 ext. 4896 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS). Tips can also be left online at catchcrooks.com.
