Microsoft Office is now available across all Chromebooks

After a year-long period of testing, Chromebook owners across a variety of brands and models are now reporting that the Microsoft Office apps are finally working.

Though there’s been no official announcement, Chrome Unboxed reports that Samsung’s Chromebook Pro, Acer’s Chromebook 15 and Acer’s CC71 are among the Chromebooks that can now access Office apps, among others.

Up until now, only certain Chromebooks had access to the Microsoft Office apps — most notably Google’s own Pixelbook.

Chromebooks with a display that’s 10.1-inches or smaller won’t need to pay for the Android version of Office, but those with larger displays need an Office 365 subscription.

Widespread access to these ubiquitous office apps will no doubt make Chromebooks a much more enticing option than previously — and no doubt Google hopes to gain more of the student market with this addition.

Microsoft, meanwhile, is countering with its own education-focused Windows 10 S operating system and inexpensive third-party devices.
