This holiday season, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada (MADD Canada) and Uber Canada are working together to launch a joint fundraising and awareness campaign centred around the dangers impaired driving

According to data from MADD, Canada is the leading nation for road fatalities associated with alcohol impairment. What’s more, crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs are the leading criminal cause of death in the country, with an average of four Canadians killed in collisions involving these substances.

To help encourage ridesharing, Uber Canada has pledged to make a $1 donation to MADD Canada for every “Compliment” badge riders give their drivers via the app to their driver during the month of December.

Compliments can range from praising a driver for car cleanliness, making conversation or having proficient navigational skills. The goal of the campaign is to raise $100,000 by the end of the month.

“100,000 thank you’s goes a long way in drawing awareness and helping recognize the important work that drivers do and how they provide a safe transportation alternative,” said Uber in a press statement.

A launch event will also be held later today in Toronto at Uber’s Greenlight Hub. Starting at 10am, Torontonians will be able to learn more about the fundraising initiative from representatives from Uber Canada, MADD Canada and Toronto Police.
