The University of New Brunswick’s Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity recently secured one of its biggest supporters to date.

On Monday, TD Bank Group announced it will become a founding corporate member of the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity. In doing so, TD is the first Canadian bank to support the institute.

Launched in 2017, the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity is a UNB-affliated centre devoted to educating new cybersecurity experts, as well as fostering cybersecurity-related research and development. The institute takes a multi-disciplinary approach to its work, collaborating with researchers in a variety of fields, including the social sciences, law, engineering and more.

“The University of New Brunswick is fast becoming an international centre of cybersecurity excellence and we look forward to working with its multidisciplinary teams on real-world problems, while growing out technology talent base,” said Jeff Henderson, executive vice-president and chief information officer at TD, in an April 30th press release.

According to TD, the institute’s graduate students will work with its technology teams to develop new threat assessment methodologies and algorithms.

The move is part of a broader initiative by TD to invest in cybersecurity. In October of last year, the bank opened a cybersecurity office in Israel, hoping to leverage the country’s expertise in the area.
