RED’s Hydrogen One smartphone delayed until August 2018

RED's CEO said that carriers will determine the phone's final release date

We’ve learned quite a lot about RED’s Hydrogen One smartphone over the past year and now we just want it in our hands. Unfortunately those eagerly waiting for the upcoming holographic display smartphone will have to wait even longer as RED has officially pushed back the launch of the Hydrogen One until August 2018.

This was announced by Jim Jannard, the founder of RED Digital Cinema Camera Company, on the company’s forums. Jannard didn’t announce an actual release date, however, and said carriers will determine the final date.

According to Jannard, the Hydrogen One’s delay is a result of the fact that the company plans on adding a second camera on the front and the back of the devices, allowing users to capture and record 4-View holographic content natively as opposed to having to purchase a secondary attachment.

Jannard also points to carrier certification as the second reason why the phone was pushed back.

“Carrier certification. This is also a big one. This takes more time than we previously thought. Additionally, we are preparing to launch with multiple carriers and organizing a simultaneous launch has proven to be pretty tricky,” said Jannard in his post.

Lastly Jannard said that the company has working prototypes that they are going to show on May 19th at RED studios, The company also plans on showing off the phone’s 4V Face Chat feature.

The Hydrogen One will feature a 5.7-inch display with a 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution, as well as a Snapdragon 835 processor and an impressively large 4,500mAh battery.

The device’s main selling point is a 4-view holographic display that allows users to move their heads around to look at objects in photos.
