JBL Link soundbar merges Android TV and Google Home into one device

The future of Google Home seems to be inside of other speaker devices

Google just debuted a new device that makes a pretty impressive play at taking over the living room.

It’s called the JBL Link, a soundbar that runs the newest version of Android TV and also has Google Home capabilities.

Prior to the JBL Link, having all these functions in one room would have meant using at least three devices. Now, users will only need this one device and it should work a lot better than a Google Home trying to connect to a television, an Android TV and a soundbar.

A commercial showcasing the soundbar shows that users can use it to ask Google to turn on their television along with a few other features that a normal Google Home can do.

I currently have a Sony X700D TV that has Android TV built in, but turning on my television is a hit-and-miss experience that usually involves phrasing my query like “Ok, Google, watch a MobileSyrup video on YouTube.”

It seems like this new soundbar will make that action a lot more seamless.

It also looks like Google isn’t only working with JBL on this type of device.

The Verge has reported that the JBL Link will be the “first in a series of hybrid devices that delivers a full Assistant speaker and Android TV experience.”

The device is currently slated for a fall release, though we might see other similar devices during Google I/O this week.
