Some Google Photos users have started to report receiving the ‘Color Pop’ update, though it doesn’t seem to be rolling out to everyone just yet.

The Color Pop feature uses Google Assistant technology to isolate a subject and then remove colour from the rest of the image. the feature was first shown off at this year’s Google I/O developers’ conference.

Users that have received this update should soon start to see images like this in the Google Photos Assistant tab.

While this technique could be completed in some photo editing apps, the fact that Google was able to automate it and then suggest these edited photos to users makes the process much more accessible.

According to Android Police, the Google Play Store has been updated with the ‘Color pop’ feature as well but it keeps getting taken down and then replaced.

The Google Photos Play Store page says “starting today, you might start seeing these new creations in the Assistant tab. The subject of your photo will stay in colour, but the background will be in black and white.”

Additionally, a Reddit user on the Google Pixel subreddit said that the feature should be available in the Google Photos app once it’s been updated past version 3.20.

The new feature can’t just be applied to every photo. It currently only works with certain photos that have a very clearly defined subject.
