All 33 communities in the Northwest Territories now have high-speed internet and 4G

High-speed internet is especially important for use in tele-education, video conferencing and e-commerce

The Canadian and Northwest Territories’ governments have announced today that a major broadband project is now complete, bringing high-speed internet and 4G to all 33 communities in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

The project aimed to provide the Northern communities with connectivity services more on par with the more densely-populated Southern regions of Canada, delivering increased usage packages, satellite-based DSL internet and 4G wireless.

High-speed internet and 4G is especially important for those who live in remote Northern areas, for applications like tele-education, video conferencing and e-commerce.

The Government of Canada contributed $7 million CAD to the first phase of the project towards the purchase of satellite capacity to enable internet service delivery to NWT communities without broadband access, while private sector partner Falcon Communications GP Ltd. and its partners contributed $2,721,600.

For the second phase, the Government of Canada contributed $14,814,120, while corporation Falcon Communications contributed $19,443,406 with support from NorthwesTel Inc. and the government of the Northwest Territories.
