After five years, Loblaws-owned PC Mobile is exiting the postpaid wireless market.

As of today — May 24th, 2018 — the wireless reseller will no longer take on new postpaid customers. On October 2nd, 2018, existing PC Mobile postpaid subscribers will move to Telus’ sub-brand Koodo Mobile.

According to the company, with the exception of optional services, customers moving to Koodo won’t see any changes to their monthly rate plans until after October 2nd, 2020. Of course, for those not interested in Koodo, customers have “the opportunity to choose a provider that best suits their needs,” says PC Mobile.

In the meantime, PC Mobile will continue to offer prepaid service, via Bell, into the foreseeable future, as well as continue to offer postpaid services via all three national Canadian carriers and their respective flanker brands at its Mobile Shop locations.

In a statement issued to MobileSyrup, a spokesperson for the company said:

“This decision is an important step in our future, allowing us to sharpen our focus on distribution and expansion of the Mobile Shop business. The Mobile Shop will continue to provide a unique multi-carrier offering, which has differentiated us in the marketplace and enabled us to provide unbiased service to our customers. We are committed to our in-store presence — convenience is important to our customers.”

PC Mobile went on to reiterate that its exit from the postpaid business will not have an effect on its existing plans to expand the Mobile Shop retail presence. The company also noted the move won’t affect its recently announced partnership with Freedom Mobile, either. Loblaws currently operates approximately 180 Mobile Shop locations across Canada.

PC Mobile launched its postpaid service back in 2013. At the time, the company’s pitch to Canadians was an alternative to the national carriers that eschewed activation and cancellation fees.
