‘Newer’ Sonos speakers will support AirPlay 2 starting in July

Sonos One smart speaker

At its home theatre event today in San Francisco, California, Sonos announced it will update newer devices in its smart speaker lineup to support AirPlay 2, Apple’s Wi-Fi streaming protocol, later this summer.

As part of a free software update, the Sonos One, second generation Play:5 and Playbase, will support AirPlay 2 in July. iPhone and iPad users will be able to use Siri to control their Sonos speaker. Sonos users with one or more of the company’s older speakers will also be able to use AirPlay 2 as long as they have those speakers paired with one of the company’s new devices.

Sonos says new devices, such as the just announced Beam, will support AirPlay 2, as well.
