While previous rumours have indicated that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10 smartphone would use an in-display fingerprint scanner, a new report from South Korea’s ET News suggests that the company will implement Qualcomm’s third-generation ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner into the upcoming handset.

According to SamMobile, Samsung may be the first ever manufacturer to use Qualcomm’s third-generation ultrasonic technology. However, Samsung may use the technology within a mid-tier smartphone before launching the Galaxy S10. DJ Koh, Samsung’s mobile chief recently indicated that the company will launch some of its newest innovations and features on mid-tier devices before bringing them to the company’s premium lineup.

Qualcomm’s third-generation sensors transmit an ultrasonic pulse against the finger. This then maps the pores and ridges of a person’s finger. The phone then collects the necessary data to accurately reproduce someone’s fingerprint.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 is rumoured to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress 2019 in February.
