Huawei Mate 20: Everything we know so far, including leaks, specs and release date

Last year, Huawei brought its P-series to Canada with the Huawei P10 and P10 Pro. This year, the company plans to bring its flagship Mate-series smartphones to Canada.

While Huawei manufactures its P-series with innovations and fun colours in mind, the Mate lineup is where Huawei showcases its newest Kirin processor, as well as prioritizes features like bigger batteries.

Now it’s time for the Huawei Mate 20 lineup. With last year’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro being powerful contenders, the Mate 20 is sure to impress.

Here’s everything that we know so far about the Huawei Mate 20 series.

The most important thing that we’ve learned about the Mate 20 is that Huawei will unveil the phone on October 16th, 2018 in London, England.

Leaked slides of the upcoming Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 reveal new information about the phones. These slides were leaked by Hebrew language speaking tech blog Girafa

The slides indicate that both variants will support wireless fast charging, an artificial intelligence feature called Hivision that seems to function like Google Lens and sport wireless ‘Easy Projection.’

Further, Easy Projection was a feature available on the Mate 10 Pro, but it required a cord to connect from the phone to a monitor, now it appears the Mate 20 series can do it wirelessly.

Moreover, Mate 20 Pro will feature an impressive 4,200mAh battery, larger than any other flagship sold in Canada,

The Pro variant will sport 3D Face Unlock — that Huawei will compare against Apple’s iPhone X. With Face Unlock, users will be able to unlock apps and other documents.

Additionally, the slides suggest that the Pro variant will sport an in-display fingerprint scanner that’ll work in half a second and Bone Voice ID technology that allows the phone to hear your voice in crowded areas, thus allowing users to unlock their phone with their voice.

A recent leak has revealed renders of Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 Pro flagship handset.

The images clearly show a wide notch that’s more similar to the iPhone X than it is to the Huawei P20 Pro. Unlike previous rumours have indicated, it appears the Mate 20 Pro will only have a single front-facing camera. It appears that there are other sensors within the notch, but it’s not exactly clear what they are.

The back of the phone shows Leica branding above a square-shape camera setup. The square-shape camera setup seems to feature three shooters with a combined dual LED flash.

Megapixel and aperture information are unclear. According to WinFuture‘s Roland Quandt, the phone may support 5x optical zoom, as well as feature a wide-angle lens.

What’s also noteworthy is the lack of any fingerprint scanners on the smartphone. This indicates that Huawei’s handset will likely sport an in-display fingerprint scanner or exclusively rely on facial recognition — similar to the iPhone X. Quandt believes the smartphone supports an in-display fingerprint sensor.

WinFuture also reports that the phone will be available in black, blue and twilight — the gradient that goes from light blue to purple. The phone may also have a dark green variant.

Quandt notes that these are official Huawei renders.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has reportedly leaked, revealing a handset that looks very similar to the Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ — well, except for the notch.

Two new images from Germany-based leaker Roland Quandt reveal the handset’s display and slim bezels.

This image shows that the Mate 20 Pro looks very long, though Quandt says that the “odd size might be caused by perspective and/or subpar photoshop skills of whoever created this marketing pic.”

Quandt also revealed that Huawei will launch the Freebuds 2 Pro, a pair of earbuds that built-in bone conduction that allows the buds to distinguish between voices. The report indicates the Freebuds’ case will also be able to charge wirelessly while sitting on top of the Mate 20 Pro.

The leak suggests that the Freebuds 2 Pro are 4.1g in weight and measure in at 43mm long and 18.6mm wide.

The Mate 20 Pro is rumoured to feature an iPhone X-style notch with a curved display similar to Samsung’s flagship smartphones. Meanwhile, the non-Pro model will likely feature an Essential Phone-inspire notch and flat display panel.

It’s important to note the information is based on a prototype of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

This likely means that only the Mate 20 Pro will feature five cameras while the other variants will have fewer cameras, similar to the P20 series. The Huawei P20 Pro is the only P20 variant that features three rear-facing cameras. The other two variants have a dual rear-facing camera setup.

Further, the leak indicates the Mate 20 Pro will sport a 1,440 x 3,120-pixel resolution and the Mate 20 will feature the previously rumoured 1,080 x 2,244-pixel resolution.

  • 6GB of RAM
  • 4,220mAh battery
  • 6.3-inch AMOLED display
  • 2,244 x 1,080-pixel resolution (Mate 20)
  • 3,120 x 1,440-pixel resolution (Mate 20 Pro)

  • Waterdrop notch (Mate 20)
  • iPhone X-style notch (Mate 20 Pro)

Release Date

Huawei will officially reveal the Mate 20 series on October 16th in London.

What to expect

While all of the Mate 20’s specs are unclear, there are some things we can guess about the handsets.

Larger Battery

While it’s unclear if both the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro will feature a larger battery, we expect, at least the Mate 20 Pro, to sport a larger 4,220mAh energy source. While 4,220mAh isn’t the largest battery ever on a smartphone, it’s not typical to see a flagship smartphone with such a huge power source.

Five cameras

Similar to the LG V40 ThinQ, the Huawei Mate 20 is also rumoured to feature five cameras. However, it seems more likely that the Mate 20 Pro will be the handset that features the five-camera array. With a waterdrop notch, the non-Pro variant only has space for a single front-facing camera.
