Intel launches its fastest desktop processor yet

The processor is meant to optimize gaming, content creation and productivity

Intel has officially launched the Core i9-13900KS, which breaks the 6GHz barrier at stock speeds, without overclocking, for the first time.

The i9-13900KS is based on the Gen Core i9-13900K from last year. The new processor will be available in stores starting today, with a recommended starting price of $699 USD ($935 CAD). It’s worth noting, however, that the processor hasn’t shown up at Canadian retailers yet.

The new processor can deliver up to 6GHz max turbo frequency out of the box, making it the first processor in the PC industry to achieve the feat with Thermal Velocity Boost technology.

“The Core i9-13900KS continues our 13th Gen Intel Core desktop processor family excellence, showcasing the new performance heights made possible by our performance hybrid architecture,” said Marcus Kennedy, Intel Client Computing Group manager. “Extreme gamers and enthusiasts can now push their everyday performance further than ever before with the first desktop processor in the PC industry to provide 6.0 GHz speeds at stock.”

Further, the processor features Intel’s ‘Adaptive Boost Technology,’ which allows for improved gaming performance by “opportunistically allowing higher multicore turbo frequencies,” and supports up to DDR5 5600 MT/s and DDR4 3200 MT/s.

The processor is also compatible with Intel’s Z790 and Z690 motherboards, which feature the latest BIOS recommended for the best gaming and content creation experience.

It’s worth noting, as pointed out by The Verge, the i9-13900KS does use more electricity than its predecessor. The base power of the 13900K was 125 watts, but Intel has bumped this up to 150 watts on the 13900KS. At max turbo power, it will hit slightly above 250 watts, similar to the 13900K.
