Following a substantial leak from Dbrand, much more information about the Nintendo Switch’s successor has hit the net.
Dbrand has shown off a new case for the Switch with a fogged plastic front that seems to show off a slightly new console design with rounded edges and a new button on the right Joy-Con.

Following this, a new leak from a user on Reddit claims that they’ve gone hands-on with the console and are sharing a lot more information, including that the name will be the Nintendo Switch 2. The leaker hasn’t publicly shown much evidence, but they sent proof to a Mod on the Switch 2 subreddit and backed up the legitimacy of the information.
On top of that, they’re saying that the console will be larger than the Switch 1, and the button seen in the Dbrand leak will be called the ‘C’ button, harkening back to the yellow N64 buttons. The Reddit leaker claims that the new model is thinner and lighter than the current Switch.
The leak also claims that the new Joy-Con controllers will attach via magnets instead of the sliding connection of the first Switch. These new magnets will also act as shoulder buttons when detached. This new Joy-Con offers buttons behind the triggers as well, but it’s expected that this will be used to release the magnetic locks.
The leakers also hinted at some hidden feature that uses lasers or perhaps infrared light, like the Nintendo Wii’s remote. As a huge fan of the Wii, I would be psyched if the new Switch offered a way to emulate Wii games. The user also seems certain that the old Joy-Cons will work with the new Switch to play on but won’t physically connect or charge on the device. That said, Nintendo released a charger for the original Joy-Cons in October, which suggests some foresight for the Switch 2 release in the new year.

There is also supposed to be a second USB-C port on the top of the handheld for easier charging. There will also be a headphone jack, volume controls and the power toggle. The triggers are larger than the first switch, and the leaker says that the joysticks are hall effect and are a tiny bit larger than the existing switch. Hall effect joysticks use magnets, so they shouldn’t have the drift problem that plagued the original Joy-Cons. The screen is reportedly still LCD, and I’d expect that it will have a better resolution than the existing Switch. The leak says that it can do 4K 30fps when docked, but has no information as to what it will do in handheld mode.
The unit still supports the same cartridges as the first Switch, but the new cartridges will have a slightly new design to prevent them from fitting into the old Switch. The new Switch 2 also has a microSD card slot. Notably, the switch and the Joy-Cons will be the same colour. The original Switch was always black, no matter what Joy-Cons you got with it.

Based on the leaks, this is what the Switch 2 dock might look like.
The leaker also mentions that there will be a special edition of the console at launch surrounding a new game with a ‘9’ in the title, which leads me to believe that it will be the next Mario Kart title.
The Switch 2 will still have a dock that looks similar to the first generation, but the new one will be smaller and show off more of the screen. Some of the leaked renders show fun animations and battery information to make it more useful, but the main leaker hasn’t confirmed this. The dock will also include two USB-A ports, one USB-C port, one HDMI port, and an Ethernet port.
If the leak is real, the official announcement of the console will happen in January, and then it will come out sometime in the spring.
