After using “Hey Google” as its wake word for years, a new trailer for Google’s upcoming Android XR software has teased that the company is going to use “Hey Gemini” in the future to trigger its virtual assistant.
Google shifted most of the Google Assistant features to Gemini AI over the past year or so, so it makes sense that it would shift to using Gemini as a wake word. Moving the wake world would likely also increase the brand recognition of Google’s AI. However, it might get confusing if most of Google’s smart speakers are still using Google Assistant.
While the feature seems to be only on the Android XR headset, it’s likely that it will come to other devices running Android in the future.
You can watch the Android XR videos where people say “Hey Gemini” on the Android Police website. They’ve cut and organized all the clips where the AI assistant is mentioned.
