Roughly two months later, Drake has withdrawn his petition against Universal Music Group where he accused his music label of artificially inflating streaming numbers of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss track.
A new filing in the New York Supreme Court has revealed that the case has been dropped, and so far, neither side seems to be receiving any penalty. The case wasn’t a full-on lawsuit but a pre-case stage that allowed each party to ask the other for information. It seems likely that Drake was trying to use this petition to build a case, but it looks like it didn’t reveal what he was hoping for. This is likely why the case has been dropped.
Drake’s camp originally accused Universal Music, which represents Drake and Kendrick Lamar, of using bots as well as making unique licensing deals and pay-to-play agreements to inflate the streaming numbers of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss track.
A second petition was filed against iHeartRadio that also accused Universal of funelling money to the radio station to promote Lamar’s song. This pre-suit is still live at the time of writing. Drake also claimed that the song is defamatory to him and that the record label never should have released the track since it made him look bad.
Update: Drake has come back around and sued Universal Music Group again.
