While there are cool features like eye-tracking added to iOS/iPadOS 18, I have a feeling that the new accessibility feature, ‘Motion Cues,’ will be the one that gets used the most.
If you go into the ‘Accessibility’ section of the Settings app and then choose ‘Motion,’ you can enable ‘Vehicle Motion Cues.’ There are two options when you turn it on: one to force it to be on and another that appears automatically when your phone detects you’re moving fast.
Once you’ve enabled it in Settings, your phone or iPad will also add a button in Control Centre. Tapping on the new button brings up the same menu from Settings that allows you to turn the feature on/off or set it to Automatic.
When the feature is enabled, roughly eight small grey dots appear on the edges of your screen. These move with the car’s motion to help keep your brain orientated when you’re a passenger.
While this sounds strange, after using it on a few long drives over the holidays, my girlfriend Alex found that it helped. As of now, she has it set to Automatic, making it appear every time we’re in the car. It’s also less distracting than we initially assumed.
After reading more about it online, I noticed that the feature doesn’t work for everyone. I still think it’s worth trying to see if it works for you. Apple’s support page also mentions that if you need to turn it on and off constantly, you can make it a Shortcut and add it to more places around your phone.
