South of Midnight from Montreal-based Compulsion Games will launch on April 8th, 2025 on Xbox Series X/S and PC, plus Game Pass.
The release date was confirmed during Xbox’s January 23rd Developer_Direct presentation, which offered a deeper dive into the Canadian-made stop-motion action-adventure game.
Specifically, we got a closer look at the Southern folklore that’s inspired the look and feel of the game from art director Whitney Clayton. We also hear from Adriyan Rae, the actress who plays protagonist Hazel, about the character’s journey to save the Deep South from mysterious creatures while looking for her mother.
Game director Jasmin Roy also walked us through different gameplay footage, which sees Hazel wielding different magical “weaving” powers to fight the haint (“ghosts”). Alongside her twin hooks for melee combos, Hazel’s powers allow her to freeze, yank and blast enemies, and you’ll have to use them in tandem to better manage crowds of foes.
