Transport Canada is mandating that cameras be added to the outer perimeter of school buses to help ensure that bus drivers can watch for cars and kids.
The cameras will kick in when the bus starts slowing down or stops, and if the bus owners want, they can also add an infraction camera, which will take photos of any cars that pass the bus illegally.
The requirement went into action on December 18th, 2024, but school bus owners have until November 1st, 2027, to equip their fleets with the new tech. A task force was started in 2019 to take on bus safety and it found that most accidents happen outside the bus.
