Motorola has been working on a ‘Large Action Model’ (LAM) for its phones since 2024, and at CES, the AI-powered tool was able to order Starbucks and Uber.
While its demo doesn’t make it appear that much more advanced than the critically panned Rabbit R1, it’s still in the early stages, and its app-based nature seems to give it a leg up on the competition. It also spells out a potential future for smartphone use that revolves around commanding our devices more, instead of working with them.
Android Authority reporter Ryan Haines claims that since you can see the LAM-powered tool going through the motions on the Motorola model, it feels more trustworthy. It does seem like the AI will be limited to things that you can already do on your phones, but if it works as advertised, that will unlock a lot of features.
Overall, it was easy to see how smartphones were going to co-opt the features from AI gadgets like the Rabbit R1, and it’s nice to see it in practice. From here, it’s easy to see how all kinds of phones could use AI-powered tools like this, and it will be interesting to see how quickly Apple and Google add similar tech into their mobile operating systems.
